Finding the address

The fado set takes place in central Funchal. The exact address is not shown on the booking page; it appears on your GetYourGuide ticket once you have booked, together with the start time for your date. Open the ticket during the day, save the address in your map app, and look at the route while it is still light. That small piece of planning matters more here than for most outings, because the doors close a few minutes after the start and latecomers cannot join.

A city built on a slope

Funchal sits in a natural amphitheatre: gentle slopes start at the coast and climb steeply into the hills behind. The centre near the water is easy to walk, but many hotels and apartments sit higher up, and a downhill stroll into town is an uphill climb home. If you are staying above the centre, allow extra time going down, wear shoes with grip for the cobbles, and consider a taxi for the return after dark.

On foot in the centre

Once you are in the centre, walking is the simplest way to move around, and the walk can be part of the evening: in the old town, some front doors are painted with flowers, ships and the sea. Leave a margin for wrong turns on your first evening, and keep the address open on your phone.

Landmarks to steer by

A few landmarks help you find your bearings. The cathedral, completed in 1514, stands in the centre and is one of the few buildings to survive almost unchanged from the early years of settlement. The Mercado dos Lavradores, the farmers' market opened in 1940 with tiled panels on its facade and entrance, sells fruit, vegetables, flowers and fish. The harbour, the leading Portuguese port for cruise ships, gives you the sea as a constant reference: downhill always takes you back to the water.

Timing your evening

Plan to arrive well before the start time on your ticket. The performance begins promptly, the glass of Madeira wine is best enjoyed before the music, and the doors close a few minutes in. If you are eating first, book a table early enough to finish without watching the clock. If you prefer to eat afterwards, the set is short enough that dinner will not be unusually late.

After the last song

When the set ends you have most of the evening ahead of you. If you are staying near the seafront, a walk back along the water is the easy option. If your bed is higher up the hillside, think about the climb before you set off: Funchal rises steeply from the coast, and the slopes that were gentle on the way down feel different after dinner. Ask your hotel or the restaurant to call you a taxi if you would rather not walk uphill, and keep the address of where you are staying on your phone. The ticket covers the music and the glass, so getting home is your own arrangement.

Practical notes

Keep these points in mind when you plan the evening, especially with young children in the party or anyone who uses a wheelchair. The age limit and the access restriction cover every member of a group, so settle them when booking, not on arrival. The rules on smoking and flash protect a small room where every sound and flicker carries.

  • No transport is laid on to or from the room
  • Children under six cannot attend
  • Wheelchair users cannot be accommodated
  • Smoking and flash photography are not allowed
  • Cancelling the GetYourGuide booking is free until 24 hours ahead
